There are so many personality tests and profiles to help understand what kind of characteristics you possess. The better you know your personality traits, the more equipped you will be to assess, tackle, and successfully carry out your job to the best of your ability.
More than that, the more you know about these different personality types, the more you’re able to understand yourself and your own behaviours in every aspect of your life. This can apply not only to your career path and your habits in a professional environment, but it can also be useful for your platonic and romantic relationships and with casual social situations, for example. Really, there’s no harm in being well-informed with your personality’s strengths, weaknesses, characteristics, and values.
Being aware of and knowing all the categories of personalities can also help you navigate your way through life with better insight and understanding. To work proactively with a team in your workplace, we encourage you to take a test if you haven’t done so already.
While there is a magnitude of personality tests, we’ve rounded up a few below for your consideration:
- The 16 Personalities test. This questionnaire measures warmth, emotional stability, liveliness, perfectionism, reasoning, sensitivity, openness to change, and tension, to name a few.
- The DiSC personality test. This personality profile measures dominance, conscientiousness, influence, and steadiness. DiSC focuses on leadership and development, management training, conflict management, and communication, built on the four categories.
- The HEXACO Model of Personality Inventory test. This 15-minute test measures the six major dimensions of personality: Honesty-humility, emotional stability, extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness to experience.
Of course, all of the above personality tests share certain commonalities and are all based on psychological research, but it’s important to keep in mind that personality is an inherently difficult element of human existence to determine, categorise, and measure. Meaning, it’s challenging to scientifically prove the accuracy of personality tests. What we’re trying to say is, personality tests are only essentially telling you what you tell it, so use them as a point of reference instead of letting it rule your life. Take it with a grain of salt, if you will.
Once you’ve determined your own personality type or types, we encourage you to familiarise yourself with the other types of personalities. Do you recognise any of your friends, family members, colleagues, or managers in the descriptions? Here are a few examples on how to survive and thrive through this jungle!
We’ll use the DiSC personality test (#2) as a point of reference.
Dominance. The most common ways to thrive alongside a dominant personality is to identify their style and use the tools you have to improve your communication with them. This means skipping the small talk and getting straight into business, focusing on the solution to an issue and trying not to take their bluntness personally. If you find yourself negotiating with a dominant personality, it's important to remain confident and objective without becoming emotional for positive results.
Influence. Working with an influencer means working with someone who is usually upbeat and enthusiastic, and the best way to strategies with influencers is to remain friendly, ask questions and listen. This way they will reveal what they’re after. The tendency an influencer has is to move quickly to solve problems, so you may need to adapt your approach so you don’t find yourself in a conflict if you’re more deliberate with your actions.
Compliance. Sometimes people with analytical or compliance personalities present us with unique communication challenges. People that fall under the compliance category don’t mind challenging other ideas, so they may make you uncomfortable by being direct and opposing your ideas or your actions.
Steadiness. The best way to work harmoniously with a steadiness personality is to be personal and amiable. We recommend expressing your interest in them and what you expect from them, taking the time to provide clarification with politeness. Steadiness personalities don’t like confrontation, aggressive, or rude behaviours.
Now that you’ve taken your personality test and have hopefully determined some of the personalities around you, this should give you a better understanding of your own unique personality to aid in personal development and awareness. You might now have a better understanding of how you best interact with others, when you need to relax, what motivates you, and how you handle stress or pressure.
